Philad^a Feb^y 21^st 1785 Sir I applied to M^r Chittleton for information in respect of the General Officers of the Virginia Line he informed me there is no Resolve of Congress whereby any of those Officers is deranged, that the claim of General Weedon is founded on the Resolve of the 14 June 1780 at which time he is called into Service, and is of opinion that the General is entitled to all Emoluments by that Resolve provided he demanded it I wish to observe to you that by the Resolve of the 18 Aug^st [undecipherable] it appears that the Congress granted the General his wish to retire from Service untill the inconveniences he then laboured under could be removed this happened on the Captivity and afterwards death of Gen^l Wood who he it seems superceded Gen^l Weedon in Rank — [undecipherable: z] was I believe the cause of his quitting the Main Army, I cannot think that Congress by their Resolve of the 16^th June 1780 meant that Gen^l Weedon should be paid for the time he remained at his own home, indeed the former Petition appears to me to give such an Idea a positive Negative, the Services of the Gen^l after 16 June 1780 you are better able to judge than I am — I have settled with several Officers [undecipherable] at Brevet Commissions but allowed [undecipherable] none of their pay agreeable to such Brevets Whatever Rank if Colonel Neville had in the Reg^t he belongs to his pay & Commutation agreeable to that Rank will be allowed and no more except additional Pay as an [undecipherable] unless by Special Resolve of Congress. I expect Cap^t Wead is with you after this with the [undecipherable] of the following [undecipherable] has Legion for Delaware, Penn, N Jersey & N York.
