Pay Office 22 Feb^y 1785 To myself We honor to inclose you an Estimate of Certificates issued by J^no Pierce Esq^r paymaster General and James Milligan Esq. Comptroller to the Al. State to the now commissioned Officers and Investors of the late Line of Pennsylvania on a final settlement of their Accounts — They leave to observe to your Excellency that the Estimates for Gen^l Waynes Reg^t and those that follow are not as accurate as I could wish owing to the Regimental paymaster omitting to mention in their last Returns the State to which the Men belonged. I am however Sensible that this Estimate will fall short of what has been issued to the Quota of Pennsylvania. James Yours &c. J^no Dickinson Esq^r J^no Pierce Jr. --- Sir Philad^a Jan^y 31. 1785 I am sorry I cannot at present comply with your request in sending the Musters of the German Regi-ment, business comes on me so fast that I cannot spare one person to assist them; I have enclosed you a Copy of a Roll made out by the pay Master to that Regiment in Order that you may check the Accounts presented to you; this Roll contains a List of those who have actually had a settlement at the Treasury as far as the 1. Jan^ry 1781— You will please to inform me what Musters are wanting as I suppose the whole need not be sent; the subsistence due the Officers from the 1 June 1778 to the 1 Nov. 1779, from which time it appears they have been settled with, is made out and shall be forwarded to you by next (if I don't forget it). I must beg the Agents of your State will pay particular attention in taking an Exact Copy of their Registers in Order to be lodged with the proper Officer, this absolutely necessary as a Check to Villainy, you cannot conceive the Number of Certificates that are presented at this Office for Inspection & in general are found to be altered, make no doubt they will creep into your part of the world. The Villains have a liguid by which they extract the whole of the sum (and sometimes the name) & figures & in the place insert what sum they please— Cap^t Sinclair has lately returned from Boston and informs me while there he had hardly any thing else to do but to dam them; to such a height has your sweet Country arrived to. this is not the worst; on Inspection of a number brought by M^r Hodgson
