Eacter Dec 16th 1784 There is great reason to suspect that a vast number of what is called Pirce´s Notes or final settlement passing in this State, are citer forged or alter´d the Gene=ral opinions, that by some means, the art of extracting the ink from the words ex=pressing the sum, hath been found out, and entering a much larger sum on the true Notes is the method practized, among the number suspected, one of the following Lenor & date is mistrusted. “No 12102- State or N. York January 1st 1784 a final settlement of an account between the U. States and Ebenezer Rock=wood there appeard to be due to him the sum of five hundred & Forty six Dollars: I do therefore certify that the said sum is pay able with interest at six or cent from the first day of January 1783 to the said Ebenezer Rockwood or Bearer. 546 Dollars Jna Pierce Commissioner Another of said notes No, 21045 dates January 10 1784 on interest from the 4th of November 1783 for 1000 Dollars in faveur of Henry Dearborn as the detection of so great a fraud is not only of very great consequence to the United State but to individuals.
