Dear Sir! Sunbury on the Susquehanna Novr 18th 1794
Before this time I presume you are acquainted with the treaty concluded with the 6 Nations. I did not conceive, 'till I delivered the last speech to them & the articles of the treaty, that they could be brought to such submissions. But they are animals that must be subdued & kept in awe or they will be mischievous, & fear alone will affect this submission. Mr Wolcott left us at [undecipherable] on the Mohoc river, & both for our expedition it was pleasanter we should come down the Susquehanna by lake Otsego with a much less toil, being altogether unacquainted with the river, relying entirely on the [undecipherable] of Mr Butler & the Pennsylvania [undecipherable]
[undecipherable] But unfortunately he found a most tiresome & tedious expedition [undecipherable]. [undecipherable] left Fort [undecipherable] the 25th [undecipherable], [undecipherable] more adverse [undecipherable] that day. Tomorrow I proceed for [undecipherable], having dispatches for [undecipherable] from home to Fort Pitt, & [undecipherable] to Col. Harmar, directing him to send on the [undecipherable] for the body to [undecipherable], where I left the letter [undecipherable] then self received. Before [undecipherable] think it necessary to renew. The treaty [undecipherable] to take [undecipherable]. The [undecipherable] currency for the operations of Congress early in the spring.
The Pennsylvania [undecipherable] made purchases as far as the Beaver [undecipherable] below Pittsburgh, which [undecipherable] they said their boundaries are extended. As I had [undecipherable] never [undecipherable] settled Congress [undecipherable] I did not know that [undecipherable] may [undecipherable] wrong it me. No objections was taken to the purchase. But you will perceive that no [undecipherable] our [undecipherable].
extension of their western line, will [undecipherable] on the purchase for the U.S. I can get no intelligence here about Congress therefore wish [undecipherable] caution. I pray you that no measures may be lost in directing our [undecipherable] in Europe to insist on an [undecipherable] evacuation of the western posts, & that Congress provide garrisons for them. [undecipherable] think when this treaty is with the western Indians is [undecipherable] & the [undecipherable] in consequence [undecipherable] settled, we shall not need to be at the expense of garrisons & [undecipherable] with those [undecipherable] we will be able to seize [undecipherable] for us like three hundred [undecipherable].
I write at random, not knowing where [undecipherable] General [undecipherable] Knox, please to give my love to him, [undecipherable] to all who shall be pleased when I am well. I pray you will not forget, when there are more [undecipherable], the report on [undecipherable] taking, which was [undecipherable] to me by [undecipherable] Select Committee.
Adieu [undecipherable]
