Having returned to this Place from Fredericksburg in hopes there would be Money or at least a letter for me by this time, but find I am mistaken by you. After writing to you by last Mail, I learnt by George Wells Esqr that Robert Morris Esqr has sent here from Genl Instructions for Selling the Public Stores in this State. Mr Wells told me he would write to Mr Morris to be [undecipherable] & to inform him if the Artillery Stores were to be Sold. Mr Wells told me he has not heard yet where those Species of Stores, valuable as they may be to the Continent, would be Sold where they are deposited in this State, for perhaps at the part of their value. I doubt if any one would give fifty Dollars. (Rent of a good Storehouse for them.) I had intended to have given up my charge this Month to any Person Mr Wells was to appoint to receive them, although no Order has ever come to me or from any one for that purpose. But now find I must be under the Necessity of retaining them longer, to prevent my own Ruin. A Mr George [undecipherable] that has brought a Suit against me for his Dragoon hire. $[undecipherable] yet he had served as an Assistant to me last Summer. On hearing I meant to give up my charge, & leave this State, he says he took advice & 3 eminent Lawyers, he tells him there was no law in this State to Protect a Continental Agent from paying all Public Debts he may contract even though
