Princeton- Sept^r 11^th 1784 Sir— M^rs Vergereau will be the bearer of this— I beg leave to recommend her to your particular attention.— Captain Blanch and [undecipherable] is with her will fully explain to you the nature of her business with you— The whole continent was made acquainted with the Death of her husband who was an Officer in Gen^l Mc Dougalls Regiment in 1776— he was killed in the field by lightning — I have spoken several times to General Mc Dougal upon the nature of her claims & upon the continent, and I assure you that the General considers M^r Vergereau as an officer who [strikethrough: was] fell in the service and was intitled to the emoluments arising from his being killed in the field, unless there are some specific regulations of Congress with which he is unacquainted— and my last conversation with him was about two weeks ago— The widow and the fatherless you know lay peculiar claim to our attention and protection— But such observations are unnecessary to M^r Peirce— as I know every thing that can be done will be done in the affair— you will excuse this trouble and believe me to be Sir, your Friend and humble Servant James K.
