Philadelphia September 16th 1788 —
Dr Sir
I enclose you the copy of a letter from Major Joseph Marking, and also a copy of the receipts transmitted by him to Steel for the payment of a detachment of the Sons stationed at Fort Pitt, two months pay for January & February last, which will shew you what persons it is to be charged to —
Major Marking received from me one thousand, [strikethrough: five] hundred sixty two dols & [undecipherable] — he has accounted for only [strikethrough: 1120?], which leaves a balance of two hundred, twenty [undecipherable] & [undecipherable] due from him — It cannot be expected that he be permitted to retain this sum in his hands, it would be unequal in respect to the others in the same service, and contrary to my directions from Congress, which was to advance only two months pay — I have therefore written to him on the subject, and drawn the enclosed order in your favor for the balance — I desire that you will attend to this business, and inform me as early as possible of the result —
I am, with esteem & friendship Dear Sir, your Obt Servt —
[Mr. White]
