[Docket: Hodgson / 2. May 84]
Dear General Philadelphia 2d May 1784
Previous to the receipt of your last letter I had agreed with a Man to serve you in the capacity of Miller, he is on board Capt. Lane in a Brig bound for Boston and will probably leave this place to morrow the Mill Stones with their whole Iron apparatus come with him. I was induced to have the Stones made and fitted here for the twofold reason, that they could be done much better and cheaper than with you I hope you will approve what I have done the Stones are large four and half feet, bigger could not be had, as this is the largest size ever imported, and none can be furnished that are making here for want of the usual cement — The masters say where larger can be used two pair should be set up — I have drawn a Bill on you pay able three days after sight for 360 dollars
have
have no doubt it will be duly honoured — the Bill in favour of Mr. [undecipherable: McFerguson?] I [undecipherable] directed and, to Charleston by Mr. [undecipherable: Lovell?] with a letter informing the reasons —
The Miller is a single Man and formerly belonged to your State is has long had the care of Mills for Messrs. Lewis and Sons who give him a good character in every respect, he appears to be a sober sensible Man and I believe will answer your purpose well — I have written you fully by him and enclosed the counter part of a written agreement made with him on your behalf for one year — He is to receive seventy two pounds [undecipherable] Pennsylvania currency with boarding washing and [undecipherable] the terms I think are low only 6/ per day — I have advanced him One quarters pay to enable him to proceed — With unfeigned regard I am
[undecipherable]
