New York March 13^th 1784. By the settlement of my Account Current with the Publick, there is a Ballance of £ 32.13.4 in my favour. This Balance arises from its appearing that the Act. for Recruiting the Comps. was never Settled. The state of this affair, is, that when the Reg. was Recruiting the Provincial Congres of New York found that the Officers were unavoidably led into expence in performing that Service, and directed one Dollar to be paid for each Recruit and afterwards upon representation Congres directed 10/ lawfull [strikethrough: to] paid for every Recruit. The Dollar for each Recruit as allowed by the provincial Congres was paid to my selfe and Lieutenants [undecipherable], we [undecipherable] for Capt. [undecipherable] by Col. A. Dougall, and this money [undecipherable] to be included in the Charge of [strikethrough: undecipherable] A. Dougalls in the Acct. Current. There is a charge of 37½ Dol. 2^d July 1776. which You have against me that I can recollect nothing about, nor can I see how, or for what that money should be paid me. It is said to be on Acct. of my Pay Rolin. It is subsequent to the Settlement of my Pay Rolls at Albany and at a time when I was at New York & Philadelphia and out of Service, for the whole of the Campaign of 1776 was not in service. But in this matter as it may here appears still a Ballance in my favour on the Account of that Company. If however any difficulty should appear respecting the payment of that balance, there certainly can be no objection to you paying the ancerages of pay & Rations due to me while I was Lieut. Col. and Lieut. Col. Command. in the third and fifth New York Regiments from the 28^th of Nov. 1776 to the first of Jany. 1781. As well as the Ration money due me during that period — Nor for my Pay of 1782 and 1783. These payments I shall be much oblig'd to you to transmit to me by M. Connoly (who was my Pay Master while I commanded the fifth Regiment) or by any other safe hand. As all the Pay Rolls and the papers necessary to enable you to settle those Accounts must be in your Office, I flatter myself no difficulties will arise to impede this business. — I am with great regard and Esteem Yr Ye M.
