Providence 24^th Feb^ry 1784 It is but a few days since I received your Letter of the 28 of January, and this Post is the first opportunity afforded me of returning you an answer — Altho' I have once or twice met with difficulty and vexation in running Money for particular Persons, yet my inclination to serve those greatly [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] time in the World, would induce me to disregard any incon-venience to myself that might arise from a compliance with your request, did it not clash with my Duty, but as this compliance would be a deviation from Instructions some time since receiv'd from M^r Morris, you cannot be offended at my refusal. — he has directed me to exchange, when I have Money, for the first that applies; and when I have not, to receive the Notes, if the possessor thinks proper to lodge them to receive the Cash as it comes in. — This last is the case at present, and I am still indebted a considerable sum. Your future applications to me will therefore be attended with uncertain success, but should I have Money when your Notes are presented, it would give me great pleasure to exchange them.
