West Point July 15 1784 Sir I am directed to pray the Agress ment by you not, agreeably to its establishment, to put into the hands of the Paymaster the subsistence of the Officers of this regiment on a return signed by General Jackson — I do not know officially the names of the Officers of the regiment, and of course whether you are to be drawn for as a Major or not — This is to be determined by your Paymaster only who is under the orders of the commanding Officer of the regiment — A remedy [strikethrough: for] he thinks proper to relieve two Majors or more or a like number below as his establishment. I shall pray it, and he [strikethrough: better] the [undecipherable] of his [undecipherable] return — for which, I am not, I do not suppose myself authorized to give any Official opinion on the subject. [strikethrough: I would be] There to [strikethrough: be] [undecipherable] a particular answer to the several parts of your Letter is unnecessary; my private opinion, which Capt Bondy informed you of, was given to him in consequence of a conversation I had with Lieut Howde Jackson at this place, wherein they informed me that you were discharged as a Major, and continued in the regiment by us as a Captain and intitled only to the allowances of the latter appointment.
