West Point July 11 1784 Dear Sir Since mine of the 28^th Ult° I have received yours of the 26 & 29 — in regard to the accounts of M^r Carlisle, you will inform him, that the arrangement of the business of this Office is such that the advances of individuals to regiments, would if taken up, be attended with the greatest confusion; [strikethrough: that there being so many persons to be used by [undecipherable] individuals, that it would [undecipherable] the greatest [undecipherable] to [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] belonging the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable]] [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [undecipherable], I have accordingly mentioned his case as well as with the other merchants who advanced goods to in Philadelphia to the regimental Paymasters, who inform me they well accommodate the business to the satisfaction of these gentlemen — M^r Carlisle ought therefore in conjunction with the other merchants to employ some confidential person to be here as soon as possible to receive certificates — You are sensible that the business of the Pay Office is very considerably diminished and that my character would [undecipherable] should I continue any [undecipherable] gentlemen in employ where success was not [undecipherable]. you are also sensible I believe that my wishes are to continue you and M^r David [undecipherable] until that time shall arrive, & the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] respects to the [undecipherable] and foreword a [undecipherable] that requires our [undecipherable] to [undecipherable], that you and M^r [undecipherable] must Howell all the [undecipherable] you can [undecipherable] lie been in [undecipherable], as far as the duties of the Pay Office will permit, the object of the settlement of my accounts being I have not time after [undecipherable] to get [undecipherable] this place but the business [undecipherable] in more, have not been able to affect it, I now resolved, set off with the public papers [undecipherable] of April by water, and that [undecipherable] shall present it — M^r Dunscomb write [undecipherable] his accounts two hundred Dollars more, as I do [undecipherable] it due to him I would you to pay to Howell for his use — [undecipherable] Ap^ril 11^th 1786 [undecipherable] M Aurdeur t.
