Knox writes to Hodgdon regarding honorary canon for General Greene
Document 1784Discusses the honorary cannon to be presented to Major General Greene by resolution of Congress.
Letter from General Knox dated 7th Feby 1784 relative to General Green’s Ordnance Boston 7th February 1784. Dear Sir Some time past Congress resolved that the Commander in Chief should present two Cannon to Major General Greene which had been taken at Eutau or some other place to the Southward, but it is difficult if not impossible in any reasonable time to procure these Cannon and have engraved upon them the substance of the resolve of Congress. In consideration of this difficulty His Excellency General Washington directed that some of the Cannon which were at West point should be engraved for this purpose, but, it was frustrated by all the Cannon at that post having been previously engraved – I have therefore to request that you would have two of the british Cannon, now in Philadelphia engraved with the enclosed inscription. – It will be necessary to have the words encircled by some handsome emblems. I beg you would be so good as to put this matter in in train immediately, and let me know, directed to me at this place the probable time when they will be finished. – The Carriages also must be put into good order. I am persuaded that the honorable The Financier will pay the expences arising upon this business upon your application to him, and shewing him a Copy of this request. If you should have any doubt upon your mind respecting the propriety of complying with this request, you will please to apply to the War Office, for further information, or direction. I am dear Sir your very humble Servant, H Knox. M Genl. Samuel Hodgdon Esquire
