[Letter from Elio Wolcott jun. Canfield Jan. 27. 1782] (Public Service) John Pierce Esquire Commissioner for adjusting the Accounts of the Army West Point [Favoured by N. Fanning] Pay Table Office Jan.^y 27^th 1782 Sir Some Time since I wrote to you informing that the State of Conn.^t had passed an Act directing the Com.^tee of Pay Table to adjust the Accounts of the State's Heros who served for Bond in the Year 1782 — Their Accounts have been principally settled and the Securities are already in Circulation — It was not expected that these Men would be paid by the Continent as they have invariably been considered by this State as Militia in the Service of the United States — I am informed that you have proceeded so far in the Settlement that you cannot receed, and that you propose to deliver the Certificates to the Pay Master to be received by them for the Use of this State — If this is the Mode which you have adopted I must request you to take a particular Receipt from each Pay Master to the State of Conn.^t for the Amount of the Pay of those Men and forward it to this Office — this will be indispensably necessary to enable us to know what [undecipherable] you have issued for the Pay of those Men — I wrote before for a list of the Men who come within the above Description to compare with the Settlement which we have made in which it will be necessary to insert the Reg.^t to which the Men belonged and the Time they Served — As this is a Matter of Consequence to the State I must request you not to suffer it to escape your Attention — I am Sir with great Respect your ob.^t Servant Elio Wolcott Jr. John Pierce Esq.^r Com.^r
