West Point Jan. 6^th 1784 To W^m [undecipherable] Esquire [undecipherable] [29/05] So West Point January 6 1784 Having paid a particular attention to your letter of Oct^o 31[undecipherable], As to enclosures, I cannot from [strikethrough: any] the [strikethrough: any] conformations I am possessed of at this place clear [strikethrough: any] this difficulties you labor under in regard to Col[undecipherable] [undecipherable] accounts — the accounts enclosed are taken from my Books, but I am not in possession of the Rolls & Abstract on which they are founded. Gates has made no settlement of his accounts, and I think it must be supposed that he drew the whole pay of the regiment after Aug 1 [17]6. A Gates is to be found, you will much oblige me by informing me, as it appears probable and [strikethrough: undecipherable] as he must be brought to a settlement. 2. In regard to the subsistence not allowed, as the orders of Congress have permitted the officer for that time to draw [undecipherable] his whole allowance, or to receive the value in money I cannot see how you can pass the charges without further evidence. when in Philadelphia, if you should require it, I may procure further information from the War Office, the Treasury, or from the Muster Rolls — and shall [strikethrough: I shall] always be happy to be honored with your commands I am^d Sir, with respect.
