Saml Hodgdon Esq.
Recommending Capn Rue
xxiv-1461789 Philadelphia 20th Aug 1789
Sir [undecipherable]
The bearer Capt Rue comes on to sollicit your assistance in obtaining something in Public Service which he has in view - As a soldier you must know him, suffice therefore to say that his services during a long and trying period were acceptable. On the Return of Peace at a reputable calling he struggled hard to maintain his family, but being under many disadvantages he was unfortunate, and in his present situation justly claims his country's assistance. The employment he asks he is well calculated to perform, and his obtaining it will make Happy a diserving, industrious poor man. I have taught him thus circumstanced to depend on your assistance. With respect and esteem
I am Sir
Your most obedt Servant
Samuel Hodgden
Honorable Genl Knox
