Community Transcription: September 2017

October 2nd, 2017

September 2017 marked the seventy-seventh month since we opened the War Department archives to community transcription, and over five years after launch we still receive requests for transcriber accounts! Here is a snapshot of transcription activity for last month:

Twenty-one new transcribers signed up last month which brings the total number of transcribers up to 2,978 as of September 30, 2017. The individuals who signed up in September mentioned an interest in the Cherokee nation, the Whiskey Rebellion, and Robert Elliot.

Newly transcribed documents include ones regarding returns for September & October 1798, funding and currency, estimate of pay & forage due the detachments, delivery of dispatches, estimate of cost to transport sundry stores from Philadelphia, request for arms, accounts and receipts enclosed, packets and letters addressed to Major Craig, general bookkeeping, and travel safety.

Our community of transcribers have added 105 transcribed pages to War Department documents, with the total number of saves being 21,061. Overall, we have had 740,905 page views.
